CAR WINDOW TINTING LAW IN NEW ZEALAND

In New Zealand, window tint limits are dictated by the NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi). For standard passenger cars, the minimum legal Visible Light Transmission (VLT)—the amount of light passing through the glass—is 35% for front and rear side windows, and the rear windscreen. Full windscreen tinting is strictly prohibited.Specific Vehicle Equipment requirements apply depending on your vehicle's setup:Front Windscreen: Full aftermarket tint film is illegal, even if it’s a clear, 100% transparent UV-blocking film. The only exception is a small anti-glare sun strip at the top, which cannot extend below the sun visor's edge when folded down.Front Side Windows (Driver & Passenger): Must have an overall VLT of at least 35%.Rear Side Windows & Rear Windscreen (Passenger Cars - Class MA): Must also maintain a minimum 35% VLT.Vans, Utes, and SUVs (Non-Class MA): If the vehicle has external mirrors on both sides, rear windows can be tinted darker than 35% VLT.Mirror & Damaged Tints: Highly reflective or mirror-like tints are prohibited. Additionally, bubbles, peeling, or fading that restricts visibility will result in failure of a Warrant of Fitness (WoF).Important Warning: Factory glass is often already lightly tinted (e.g., 70% VLT). The combined factory glass + applied film must still meet the 35% VLT minimum requirement. You can check out the full Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual (VIRM) provided by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi for complete, official specifications. If you're considering getting a tint or are checking an existing one, tell me:What make, model, and year is your vehicle? Are you interested in tinting a passenger car or a commercial van/ute?I can help you determine the best legal VLT options for your specific vehicle!

QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently Asked Questions

As long as your window tint meets NZTA legal standards — a minimum of 35% visible light transmission (VLT) on front side windows — it will not affect your WOF. Dr. Tint & Wrap Rotorua installs only NZTA-compliant films, so your vehicle stays road-legal and WOF-ready from day one.

Yes. Rotorua experiences high UV exposure and warm summers, and the region's geothermal environment means vehicles are often parked outdoors for extended periods. Quality window tint blocks up to 99% of UV rays and significantly reduces cabin heat, protecting your interior from fading and cracking while making every drive more comfortable.

Dr. Tint & Wrap Rotorua offers efficient same-day installations for most vehicles, with most jobs completed in one to three hours. After installation, a curing period of 24 to 48 hours is required before you wind down your windows — your technician will advise you on exactly what to expect on the day.

Dr. Tint & Wrap Rotorua offers a range of professionally graded films including standard dyed films, mid-range options, and premium ceramic films. Ceramic films are the top-tier choice, providing superior heat rejection, UV protection, and clarity without interfering with GPS, mobile signals, or dash cam performance — ideal for Rotorua's varied driving conditions.

The right tint shade depends on your goals — whether that's maximum heat rejection, privacy, or glare reduction — as well as your vehicle type and NZTA compliance requirements. The Dr. Tint & Wrap Rotorua team will assess your vehicle and recommend the best film and VLT percentage to suit your needs and keep you fully road-legal.
